The right material for your dining table
Making the right choice when buying a dining table means knowing which material works better for your décor. Since getting a dining table is not something you often do, you need one that’s sturdy and durable. This way, you know you can enjoy dining at your table for years to come. The following are the most popular materials for dining tables.
Mango wood
A dining table made of solid mango wood is a superb addition to your dining area. This hardwood has dense grains in dark brown and soft honey shades. Such details make mango wood one of the most popular choices in furniture.
A durable and hardwearing wood, mango makes a perfect dining table. Get yours and enjoy the timeless beauty of a unique piece of furniture. Accessorise it according to your preferences. A mango wood table comes with a metal frame (or legs), which makes it fit in any type of décor.
Acacia wood
If you want a dining table in a unique design, get one made of acacia wood. We value the beauty of natural wood, especially a tropical one like acacia. To emphasise the wonderful grains and textures, all acacia dining tables come in a natural finish. Furthermore, the edges of the table sometimes follow the original shape of the tree – how beautiful is that? Opt for a dining table made of solid acacia wood and design a superb dining atmosphere.
Teak
Teak is a durable hardwood, that stands out through its beauty. Dining tables made of teak are perfect in a farmhouse inspired interior. Each table was kiln dried and fine sanded to get that smooth tabletop you’ll love. We recommend opting for a teak dining table with hand carved legs for a timeless décor style in your dining area.
MDF & Chipboard
We all love natural wood, but did you know there’s an option that allows you to enjoy stunning and time-resistant furniture for more affordable prices? Check out our collection of MDF and chipboard tables. They’re robust and steady, with lovely finishes. Another advantage of these two materials comes from their versatility. At vidaXL you’ll find dining tables in various colours, shapes, or sizes that are built to last.
Glass
Who says you can’t have a glass dining table? A fine solution for a contemporary dining area, every glass table at vidaXL is a standout piece. The tempered glass, transparent or black, ensures durability and class. Combined with a metal frame or metal legs, these glass dining tables are built to last and give a modern or industrial look to your dining space.
Which shape should your dining table have?
The perfect dining table exists! If you’re in the middle of decorating your dining or kitchen and don’t know which shape is the right one, look at the space you’re working with. Let’s see which dining table suits your needs best.
Rectangular tables
A rectangular dining table is the most popular choice. Due to its rectangular shape, this table offers plenty of space. But it also takes quite some floor space, which is why you should place it in a bigger room. The major advantage of having a rectangular table comes from the possibility of being creative with chairs or benches.
Oval dining tables
There are only two differences between a rectangular and an oval table. They leave the same room for people sitting, but the oval one is visually lighter. This helps with your design, especially when decorating a warm and welcoming dining room. Next to that, the curved edges give your room a softer look.
A square-shaped dining table
With ample counter space, the square table brings a restaurant vibe into your home. They work perfectly in a square room, to emphasise the symmetry. Keep in mind that, as fancy as they are, square tables take up plenty of room. To minimize the floor space, we recommend getting a square dining table with thinner legs.
Round dining tables
A round dining table has several advantages. You can chat with everyone at the table, and it’s easy to add a chair if everyone sits a bit closer together. Complete your dining set with an eye-catching vidaXL round table with a detailed pedestal.
Bar tables for smaller spaces
Do you have a small home or living room? Use this space wisely. A bar table is a practical solution. Because the table is higher, it creates an airy look, and it doesn’t take up too much floor space.
Found your dining table? Have a look at our dining chairs
When you’ve chosen your dining table, it’s time to pick out a few good-looking chairs, like our (faux) leather chairs to go with a wooden or glass table. Another option is to combine various types of chairs. Mix different materials, shapes, or colours to create a striking effect.
What is the right size for a comfy dining table setup?
The shape and size of a dining table dictate what your space will feel and look like. Make sure you don’t overcrowd your dining or kitchen area. At the same time, you need plenty of room around the dining set for morning traffic. Don’t forget about the comfort you’ll enjoy while sitting. Make sure to take the right measurements.
How high should a dining table be?
The standard height of a dining table is around 71 – 76 cm. This allows a correct position while sitting. To ensure this, pair it with chairs or benches that are 45 to 50 cm tall. You can also choose a bar table for your dining area. In this case, the standard height reaches 101 – 106 cm, appropriate for bar chairs that are 71 – 75 cm tall.
Dining tables for 2 people
A cosy dining setup for two needs a minimum table surface of 61 x 76 cm. If we add a shared area (between place settings for each person), then the proper dimension of a table for two is 61 x 91 cm. A round table for two needs to have a diameter of at least 60 cm.
Dining tables for 4 people
To comfortably accommodate four people, you’ll need a table that’s 122 x 76 cm big. Choose one that’s 122 x 91 cm, to have enough shared area. In case of a round table, go for one with a diameter of 100 cm.
Dining tables for 6 people
Six people can fit a rectangular or oval table with a size of 183 x 76 cm, or 198 x 91 cm for more comfort. The diameter of a round table of 120 – 140 cm should comfortably suit a dining setup for 6 people.
Dining tables for 8 people
The right size of a rectangular or oval table for 8 people is 244 x 76 cm. Allow you dining setup more space and pick one that’s 259 x 91 cm big. Although it’s not very common, when looking at a round table for 8, it should have a diameter of around 170 cm.
Tips for choosing the right dining table
When you’re shopping for a dining table, a little preparation is a good idea. And we’re more than happy to give you a few handy tips.
-
Have a look at where you want to put your new table. Measure both the space and the table, to prevent disappointment. A good way to visualise the space it will take up, is to put newspapers on the floor in the shape and size of the table you’ve got your eyes on.
-
Choose a table that matches your home decoration style. A wooden table will look good in a classic or rural home design, but when wood is combined with metal, you’ll end up with a more industrial look. A glass tabletop goes well with a modern interior.
-
Consider the number of people you’ll want to accommodate. Make sure everyone has enough room to pull up a chair. Alternatively, you could go with a dining bench.
-
The shape of your table has to suit the rest of your furniture. A round table looks great, but its downside is that you can’t put it against the wall, like a square one.
